Wise Counsel
Godly people are one of the ways God guides us – godly men and women seeking Christ.
‘Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. That was how both David and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel’s advice.’’ (2 Samuel 16:23)
Ahithophel flies a bit under the radar, but he is mentioned 17 times in the Old Testament. When King David was looking for advice, he went to his advisor, Ahithophel. But it wasn’t just intelligent counsel he received. He was asking advice from a man whose perspective came from having spent time with God. He was not merely giving his personal opinion.
Some of the people whose advice I have most valued are people who walk with God. They give insight that, often unwittingly on their part, goes beyond human wisdom to the wisdom and insight that comes from God. They read and digest the Word of God. They see beyond the issues that may be troubling to us, to the sovereign activity and wisdom of God. They are ready to live with mysteries and inconveniences with the assurance that there is a bigger picture than we can see. We are not intended to live the Christian life alone, but in fellowship with other believers whose wisdom, insights and experience lead us to a divine perspective.
Wise counsel builds wise living.
